Military Commissioning Ceremonies
Air Force — 8:00-9:30 a.m., Statler, Beck Center Auditorium
Army — 8:30-9:30 a.m., Willard Straight Hall, Memorial Room
Navy — 10:00 a.m.-noon, Statler, Beck Center Auditorium
9:30 a.m.-noon — Visit Gardens of Cornell Plantations

Late May is a fantastic time to see and enjoy the gardens and grounds of Cornell Plantations—the arboretum, botanical garden, and natural areas of Cornell University.
Visitor Options:
There are 45-minute guided, walking tours at 9:30 a.m., 10:00 a.m., 10:30 a.m., 11:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m., leaving from the tent facing Plantations Road.
Please wear sturdy walking shoes. If you prefer a self-guided tour, you can pick up a map at
the garden gift shop, located in the lower level of the Lewis Education Center. It will be open both
Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24 from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
Transportation:
Unrestricted but limited parking is available at the botanical garden (campus map quad F4).
Also, a morning CU Transit bus will run every 20 minutes to and from the gardens with stops at Baker Flag Pole
on West Avenue and across from RPCC on Jessup Road beginning at 9:00 a.m. and running until 12:30 p.m.
9:00 p.m. - 12:00 a.m.— Special Public Viewing Night, Fuertes Observatory
If the weather permits, the Fuertes Observatory on North Campus will be open for public viewing of planets, star clusters, and galaxies. Tours of the facility and the beautiful hand-operated 85-year old telescope will still take place if the weather is cloudy, although the observatory will close early in such instance. Fuertes Observatory is located on Craddit Farm Dr. on the eastern end of North Campus, above Beebe Lake. From central campus, cross Triphammer Bridge and take the first right turn; follow Craddit Farm Dr. up past Balch Hall, Helen Newman Gym, and Appel Commons. Fuertes will be on the right, across the street from the Appel parking lot.
10:00-11:00 a.m. — Phi Beta Kappa Induction Ceremony, G-1 Uris Hall
The induction ceremony for students who are new members of the Cornell chapter of Phi Beta Kappa, Theta of New York, will be held in G-1 Uris Hall. 11:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m. and 3:00-5:00 p.m. — Rock Climbing, Bartels Hall
Climb on North America's Largest Natural Rock Climbing Wall. No experience necessary. Instruction and all equipment provided. $24 per person for 2 hours for pre-registration; $30 at the door. Spaces are limited so pre-registration is strongly recommended. Call 607 255-6183 to register. Minimum age to participate is 6.
12:00 p.m.-5:00 p.m. — Canoeing on Beebe Lake
Paddle around the beautiful lake in the heart of campus. $12 per person per hour for pre-registration; $15 on site. Spaces are limited so pre-registration is strongly recommended. Call 607-255-6183 to register.
12:00-1:30 p.m.— Senior Class Convocation, Schoellkopf Stadium
The Senior Class President, Cornell University President David J. Skorton, and special guest, (to be announced), will address Cornell University's annual Senior Convocation for graduating students and their families only. The Class of 2009 will present its class gift to the university. Tickets are NOT required for the outdoor event in the stadium. Severe Weather Plan: Barton Hall
In case of severe weather, the Senior Class Convocation will be moved to Barton Hall and WILL require tickets. Tickets
will be included in undergraduate students' Commencement Information Packet.
1:30-3:30 p.m. — President's Family Reception, Arts Quad
The University President and the Board of Trustees will host an afternoon reception for students and their families and guests. The informal, stand-up event will be held outdoors under a magnificent tent on the Arts Quad. Light refreshments will be served.
2:00-4:00 p.m. — D.V.M. Hooding Ceremony, Bailey Hall
This formal ceremony will be held in Bailey Hall. All new Doctors of Veterinary Medicine take the Veterinarian's Oath and individually receive the hood that signifies both their doctoral degree and the institution awarding it. 2:30-4:00 p.m. — Johnson Graduate School Recognition Ceremony, Bartels Hall
This formal event will recognize each graduate as they walk across the stage in their regalia, at Newman Arena, Bartels Hall. A lovely reception will follow in Sage Hall. No tickets are required and there is no limit to the number of guests who can attend. Diplomas will be distributed on Sunday, 12:00-1:30 p.m. in Sage Hall, Dyson Atrium following the University Commencement ceremony. 2:45-3:45 p.m. — Cornell Wind Ensemble Concert, Arts Quad
Cornell's premiere instrumental student ensemble performs international and American music as well as Cornell songs on the Arts quad. In case of rain, the concert will be held in Barton Hall.
5:00-7:00 p.m. — Ph.D. Recognition Ceremony, Barton Hall
This is a special recognition event held in Barton Hall for Ph.D. and D.M.A. candidates. Candidates will be individually recognized and have a photo taken with President Skorton on the stage. Families, friends, and faculty members are invited to attend this event and no tickets are needed for guests. A reception serving light appetizers will immediately follow in Barton Hall.
An RSVP is required by all Ph.D. candidates participating in this event by May 17, 2009. You must register using the online RSVP here.
8:00 p.m. — Senior Week Concert
The Cornell University Chorus and the Cornell University Glee Club will present their annual Senior Week Concert at Bailey Hall. See order form in the Commencement Weekend Information booklet or www.gleeclub.com. (Note: Tickets will be held at the door for you, not mailed.) Tickets are $10 and may also be purchased at www.baileytickets.com

9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. — Commencement Ceremony, Schoellkopf Stadium
- 8:00 a.m. Guests start arriving at stadium seats
- 9:15 a.m. Procession assembles on Arts Quad
- 10:00 a.m. Procession arrives at stadium (being seated 10:00-11:00 a.m.)
- 11:00 a.m.-12:00 p.m. Commencement ceremony for all degree candidates
The ceremony will be held in Schoellkopf Stadium. Students should make arrangements ahead of time to meet family and guests at the college ceremonies following commencement.
12:30-3:00 p.m. — College/School Ceremonies and/or Receptions
Diploma ceremonies and receptions will follow immediately, at various locations across the campus. A listing will be available in the commencement program that you'll receive at the stadium and on the College Ceremonies & Receptions page.
